The 3rd edition of the International Off-Grid Renewable Energy Conference and Exhibition (IOREC) took place in Nairobi, Kenya on 30 September and 1 October 2016. The Conference was organized by IRENA in partnership with the Kenya Ministry of Energy & Petroleum and the Alliance for Rural Electrification (ARE). The conference brought together over 550 stakeholders from across the off-grid renewable energy value chain, including representatives from rural electrification agencies, ministries in charge of renewable energy development, private sector, academia, financing institutions and international organisations.

IOREC 2016 hosted stimulating discussions on different facets of off-grid renewable energy deployment. Key messages and findings from the conference are outlined in the IOREC outcome paper:

Three major IRENA reports were launched at the Conference:

In parallel with the Conference, ARE organized an exhibition to give the private sector an opportunity to showcase products and projects, and offer participants ample networking occasions.

IOREC is the global platform for sharing experience and best practices about design and implementation of enabling policies, tailored financing schemes, innovative business models and technology applications for stand-alone and mini-grid systems. The first edition of IOREC was organised in Accra, Ghana in 2012 and the second in Manila, Philippines, in 2014. The conference convenes diverse stakeholders from the sector, gathers perspectives on key deployment barriers and facilitates dialogue to highlight solutions to accelerate rural electrification through off-grid renewable energy systems.

IOREC 2016 took place back-to-back with the SEED Africa Symposium (28-29 September), an international forum to stimulate growth of social and eco-entrepreneurship in Africa.

The SEED Africa Symposium is an annual international forum for sharing knowledge and experience, establishing partnerships, and developing solutions to stimulate the growth of social and eco-entrepreneurship across the African continent. With this year’s topic ‘From Innovation to Imitation’ SEED brought together around 500 enterprises, researchers, practitioners, investors, policy makers and representatives of the civil society to discuss how we could collaboratively utilize the replication of business models for successfully contributing to green growth and sustainable development in Africa.

B2B Off-grid Matchmaking
29 September
Safari Park Hotel, Nairobi

Alliance for Rural Electrification (ARE), in collaboration with the Africa-EU Renewable Energy Cooperation Programme (RECP), hosted a B2B Off-grid Matchmaking event the day before IOREC on 29 September 2016 in Nairobi.

The event featured structured B2B and B2Finance matchmaking sessions that offered participants the opportunity to network and identify business partners and financiers, as well as advancing existing projects at different stages of maturity. It was complemented by opening remarks from a high-level speaker, and presentations on the business services offered by ARE and the RECP.

The B2B event mainly targeted businesses and financiers from Africa and Europe working in mini-/off-grid renewable energy markets in Africa. More information is availble on the event page.
